Video Not Working? Fix It Now

In this video, I explore the comical and cringe-worthy character of Mr. William Collins from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Though he may seem like a minor character, Mr. Collins plays a crucial role in satirizing the societal values of the time. l delve into his background as the heir presumptive to Longbourne, his self-invitation to stay with the Bennet family, and his absurd proposal to Elizabeth Bennet - which she swiftly rejects.

l also take a closer look at his later proposal to Charlotte Lucas, the practical reasons behind her acceptance, and Elizabeth’s visit to the couple in Kent, where Mr. Collins tries (and fails) to flaunt the life Elizabeth "missed out on."

The video highlights his awkward behavior at the Netherfield Ball, including his request for the first two dances with Elizabeth and his inappropriate approach to Mr. Darcy. Mr. Collins is a figure of fun and rightful mockery, and through him, Austen expertly critiques the social conventions of the time. Join us as we dissect Mr. Collins’ misguided self-importance, lack of awareness, and the humour that makes him one of Austen’s most memorable characters.
