The Art of Discernment: Listening From Silence

Discernment, or clear seeing, is not something developed through effort but rather something that arises naturally as the self dissolves. The less we are entangled in ego—its judgments, projections, and opinions—the clearer we see. This process of letting go can feel disorienting at times, as old reference points fall away.

True discernment is not about forming rigid judgments but about remaining open, present, and unattached to conclusions. It is an openness that allows reality to reveal itself, rather than imposing our conditioned views upon it. Like the Zen farmer who simply says, "We'll see," discernment rests in presence rather than fixed positions.

Stillness is key. In the depth of silence, clarity emerges—not as an intellectual stance but as a natural, unforced way of seeing. From this place, discernment moves with love and compassion, yet never at the expense of truth. The world itself becomes the guru, constantly inviting us to refine our seeing, to recognize when we’ve fallen back into judgment, and to return to presence.

Ultimately, discernment is not about passing or failing, but about learning. Every experience—especially those that challenge us—becomes a teacher if we are willing to see.
