All of us at Drum Channel are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Emil Richards. Emil will be remembered as one of the most recorded and influential percussionists of the 20th century. He was the finger snaps on The Addams Family, the bongos on Mission Impossible and the xylophone on The Simpsons theme songs. He helped define the term “studio percussionist”, was among the first to introduce “world” percussion instruments to western music and his sight reading ability was legendary. His work with artists from Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzerald and George Shearing to Frank Zappa, Marvin Gaye, George Harrison and George Duke— both independently and as part of The Wrecking Crew— continues to touch generations of music and musicians. In this interview, Emil and Joe Porcaro shares some amazing stories of their vast careers in the music industry as both studio and live drummers and percussionists.
