Described as “…rare in its combination of intellectual and aesthetic pleasure” by the New York Times, Firelei Báez’s work re-contextualizes historical narratives and prompts their deeper consideration. The New York-based artist embraces traditional and untraditional means of making striking works of art through her investigations of Hispaniola’s histories, as seen in her wall-sized work in the ICA collection and in the monumental commission opening at the ICA Watershed in the summer of 2021.
This conversation was hosted virtually through the ICA/Boston and filmed live at the ICA Watershed in East Boston on May 6, 2021. The talk was moderated by Eva Respini, the ICA’s Barbara Lee Chief Curator.
