If you are on a budget, you might think that vintage style papers and ephemera are out of your reach. NOT so. I’m sharing many ideas today for how to access authentic papers, ephemera, fabric and other affordable supplies to achieve the vintage aesthetic in your junk journals. AND, I’m sharing my favorite tools, as well.

Coffee is a classic for creating vintage, aged paper effects. Brew a strong pot, let it cool, then dip, paint, or sponge the liquid onto paper. Old coffee grounds can also be reused for a texture. Print digital images on regular printer paper or lightweight cardstock for DIY ephemera. Many creators share free or affordable printable designs online, which you can resize, layer, or collage. Reach out to friends and family for unwanted greeting cards, postcards, or note cards. They’re great for cutting out decorative elements, quotes, or background layers. Thrift stores and library sales are ideal for cheap vintage books, magazines, and old maps. Choose books with interesting illustrations, textures, or unique fonts to use as background pages, pockets and tuck spots, or for cut-out elements. Envelopes, catalogs, and cardboard from junk mail or food packaging can be upcycled into journal pages, pockets, or tags. Look for scraps or offcuts at fabric stores, or even try using old linens or clothing. Textured wallpapers and paper samples can also add depth to pages. Collect leaves or flowers, press them between book pages, and use them in your journal for natural, delicate embellishments. Household objects like bubble wrap, sponges, or lace can create interesting patterns with acrylic paint. Dip them in paint and stamp onto pages for unique backgrounds.

These and more budget-friendly supplies keep your journals unique, add character, and create layers that feel organic and personal. I hope you will subscribe to my channel for more ideas for creative journaling. Thanks for spending time with me today!
