An undergravel filter is a slatted tray which forms a false floor that allows a layer of gravel to be suspended above a water filled space. One or more vertical pipes, called airlifts (or uplifts), are attached to the plate through which water is drawn using a powerhead or an airstone (powered by an airpump).
A UGF is run by an air pump and air stones, or some types can be used with a. We feel that these filters can be very effective, but are best used in tanks under 55 gallons in size, and are NOT appropriate for use in reef tanks. UGF's may work just fine.
These filters are cheap and available in a range of sizes that fit standard-sized tanks from 10 to 55-gallons. They work well for small planted tanks, since debris decaying in and under the substrate provides nutrients your plants can use. They also act similarly to air stones and oxygenate your aquarium water.
