Zimanga covers approximately 7000 hectares of breathtaking bushveld that includes a scenic river and mountain backdrop. Zimanga is known for its numerous underground hides, all of which offer wildlife photographers the unique opportunity to photograph birds and mammals up close and at eye-level! I had to opportunity to spend an afternoon in the Lagoon Hide, which overlooks two ponds on the edge of a large dam, giving you both front-lit and back-lit subjects. Lots of different waterbirds came to feed and bath, as well as a beautiful water monitor. The highlight of my trip was an over-night session in Tamboti Hide where I sat patiently for 17 hours! When I first arrived in the afternoon, I saw plenty of birds, as well as nyalas, warthogs and white rhinos come to drink. During the night a black-backed jackal came past, as well as another large rhino bull. When it got light, scores of storks lined the little waterhole in front of the hide as they fed on the 100's of grasshoppers that had died in the water overnight. Shortly after, two lionesses and their two cubs completely surprised me and drank right in front of me! I couldn't believe my eyes! Having wild lions drinking a mere 4 meters away from you is an unforgettable experience, and something that you can only experience at Zimanga... When I wasn't sitting in an underground hide, I went on game drives through the reserve. We saw rhino, buffalo, lots of general game and more lions. We even photographed some of the resident Zimanga cheetahs on foot, giving us a unique ground-level perspective. I stayed at Zimanga Main Lodge in one of the six spacious and well-designed rooms, which has plenty of space for photographers to sit and edit. The rest of the lodge was stunning as well and I loved the view in particular. The staff were friendly and flexible and the food was amazing... I can't wait to go back to Zimanga!
