▬▬▬▬ ✈ I’m in the Dhanbad and Jharia area in Jharkhand, India, a place known by many as hell on Earth. Here, an underground fire has been burning for over 100 years, devouring houses and people, while the flames continue relentlessly. This fire started in 1916 when coal mining began, and since then, it has never stopped burning. Today, the area houses one of the largest and most polluting coal mines in the world, which remains a center of environmental devastation. The largest mining area in the world.
For more than 200 years, coal has been extracted from these lands, first through underground tunnels and later through open-pit mining, which triggered an uncontrollable fire. This fire has consumed over 270 km², sweeping entire communities and forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes. The human cost of living in this area is incredibly high, with diseases like tuberculosis, lung cancer, and widespread respiratory issues. 99% of the population suffers from respiratory conditions due to constant exposure to carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and other airborne toxins.
Flames continue to emerge from deep within the earth, destroying everything in their path. The heat here exceeds 100 degrees, the air is toxic, and the ground seems ready to collapse at any moment. This is one of the world’s largest sources of pollution, with more than 40 billion tons of coal lost in the fire, resulting in over a billion dollars in damages. But in the end, the ones who pay the highest price are the people still living in this forgotten area of the world.
