The Book of Job #36 (9:14-24) Escaping God's Wrath

Job, from just about the onset of the book of Job, is a man in despair. And chapter nine is probably the place where the despair is most felt. The language here and the arguments put forth are extraordinary and I think, crucial for Christians of all stripes. Job is considering a lawsuit against God. You have probably heard of the concept before, where God has his day in court. I think there is a movie about it out there, though I have yet to see it. While the idea of a lawsuit against God may seem outrageous to some pious souls, we have to remember that it’s Job the “blameless” man who is now running a mental exercise with the very idea. Why has Job reached such a position? My study of job leads me to believe that it is because Job sees God as angry. That is, Job seems to believe, because of the experiencing that he is living, that God’s “default” position towards humanity is one of anger. What’s worse is that Job’s thought process is more precise than that, he believes anger is God default position against man whether is righteous or wicked. As we will see later, this belief by Job has far reaching implications. There are a couple other things that we can point out in this article that Job does in chapter nine. One is that he makes 2 indictments against God that are quite serious in nature. The other is that Job declares God’s sovereignty, but it’s not in the “life is wonderful” cultural Christian way, where people like to tell others “Oh, don’t worry, God is in control,” but let a fly buzz in their ear (as John Calvin quipped) and they will curse God. If there is one way that I can succinctly state what is happening in Job 9:14-24 (the text we are dealing with in this article) it would be thus: Job is further contemplating, the problem of God’s wrath towards mankind. Our second goal is to create an awareness of how culture disintegrates without a proper understanding of the Bible and the valuable truth found in it. Our third goal is to use technology to create awareness of Biblical teachings online and increase the overall footprint of Biblical Truth online.
