Upon waiting at Gal Oya Junction for my train to Trincomalee, I was in awe of all the "Britishness" around me, so I decided to ask questions and ended up getting a full-blown tour. Thank you, Suranga, for giving us your insightful knowledge! I had an amazing time. The "train nerd" part of me is very happy.
When visiting Sri Lanka, it became very obvious to me that the British Empire once ruled the country (back then Sri Lanka was called "Ceylon"). This is evident by the train network, design of the stations and colonial buildings, fortresses, and even the fact that school kids have to wear a "uniform" like they do in Australia, New Zealand and other former British colonies.
Ultimately, this is a video showing a small portion of what the British Empire left behind in Sri Lanka (particularly trains and everything relating to them). 75 years later and they're still using British steel from the colonial days!
