134 years ago, Southern Railway 154 was built to serve the south. Yet after 63 years of service, she was retired in 1953 and placed as a display piece in Knoxville's Chilhowee park. However in 2010, the Gulf & Ohio Railroad bought the 154 and restored her, placing her back into service on their Three Rivers Rambler Christmas Lantern Express, an excursion that makes dozens of runs during the Christmas season.
However, with her 15 year rebuild date finalizing at the end of the 2024 season, the 154 will be taken into the shops where she won't see daylight for the foreseeable future. Travel with us as we venture into the heart of Knoxville this Christmas season to see the 154 in action in her last days. As we travel from the city to the countryside, you're sure to enjoy the classic echo of that lonesome whistle of the oldest operating Southern Railway locomotive in the nation.
From RailfanMicahTurner, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Here's to hoping your season is filled with blessings and warmth from those around you, and my prayer is that God be with you in this season of giving. My gift to you all takes us back to the glory days of steam, and I hope you enjoy!
