Neil Armstrong. The first person to milk a cow. But being an innovator means taking risks and discovering the rules. It means being a guinea pig in your own experiment. And that’s no different when the land you’ve discovered is the internet. Nowadays, dating apps like Tinder and Hinge make it even easier to connect with people online whereas Reddit and Discord are perfect for building a community of your own. And what about social media platforms? They are the best way to meet old friends and lose new ones. Yet, none of this would have happened had it not been for a certain site that laid the groundwork for internet subcultures: Craigslist. [1] The online classified ads board was set up all the way back in 1995, the same year as Toy Story, the world’s first computer animated movie. To us, that’s only 30 years ago (at the time of writing at least), but in technological terms that’s ancient history. Heck, in internet times it’s practically primordial! Craigslist’s the online equivalent of a fish growing legs! It was a time when the Internet was installed from a CD that you got in the mail. And showing off a three-and-a-half-inch floppy was a genuine tech flex! However, this online message board's influence extends far beyond creating the framework for today's apps; it serves as a quintessential example of online human behaviour. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s time to learn how history works as we chronicle the rise of ‘Craigslist’ – the grandfather of message boards.
