We’ve heard that Vienna, Illinois is a fun antique destination, but are shocked (and thrilled) to learn that everything belonging to the owner of the town’s namesake antique mall are half off! What’s going on here?
From fine 1880s furniture and authentic antiques to depression and MCM glass, early prints and vintage Esquire magazines, there’s no shortage of interesting finds at half price! We score some incredible deals at 50% off, including a large Witco burnt wood wall shield from the 1960s, a scarce copper safety razor and a ribbon set from a 1950s store display. We find bargains from other dealers on a Falstaff Beer cooler chair, a fabulous 50’s peacock fan vase and a kitschy 1980s fiber optic lamp—but those dealers aren’t liquidating, and the owner assures us she’s sticking around. So, what’s the story?
The mystery unravels after we explore the downstairs vendors, where we spot cool vintage luggage, a 1970s triple-oval mirror and a solid wooden pulley. We meet a new YouTuber, @Richkuenneke with a passion for local history, who tells us about Paul Powell, a local boy who made good in politics…a little too good, in fact! Upon his death, a small fortune was found, acquired in ways that weren’t exactly above board…and now, items from his estate which weren’t seized are making their way to market.
Elegant sterling candlesticks, stylish MCM cigarette sets, Fenton Ivory Crest, and a coveted Michelin Man ashtray from the Powell estate are already on display in the mall’s front two showcases, just a glimpse of what may be coming soon! Now the liquidation sale makes sense—it's a chance to move out old stock and bring in treasures from the estate of this notorious Illinois politician. We can’t wait to see what else this fun antique mall has in store on our next visit!
