My story begins two days before Hurricane Helene arrives, I was happily gathering pawpaws for the first time which is a rare, native, tropical fruit that grows in the Appalachian Mountains.
No one in Watauga County ever thought we would see a day of such destruction. Devastation was around every corner but so was the incredible strength and endurance of our community. Neighbors helping neighbors before help even arrived . As it all unfolded before my eyes with my friend Dawn Shumate, who I was talking to at times, together we experienced Watauga County turned into a disaster area.
Included in the video is Boone, Todd, Sugar Grove, Cove Creek, and Zionville in Watauga County, North Carolina.
