Imagine this: you’ve built a nice Excel report, everything looks great. Then you add data for the next month, but your charts and formulas don’t automatically update. So, you spend time manually editing the chart and formula to include the new data.

Sound familiar? It doesn’t have to be that way because Excel can automatically adjust your charts and formulas whenever new data is added.

There are two ways we can achieve this.

With Excel Tables, we can add a new row of data, and you can see the chart and formula automatically include it. However, the problem with tables is they don’t work with dynamic array formulas that spill, and you can only use their structured references on whole columns, which won’t work if you require a specific range of cells.

And this is where Excel’s functions that return references come in handy.
