The North Vietnamese Ground Control Intercept crew at Phuc Yen airbase huddles around their radar to watch the familiar electronic signatures gradually dancing across their screen. Everything matches the pattern they’ve seen dozens of times before: the jamming signals, the formation spacing, the flight path. Right on schedule, it’s another predictable bombing run by slow and cumbersome American F-105 Thunderchiefs on their way to Hanoi - sitting ducks for North Vietnam’s lethal MiG-21 interceptors. Ground Control quickly vectors Phuc Yen’s MiGs toward the incoming formation, confidently preparing to add to their mounting tally of victories. But as the sleek Soviet-built aircraft burst through the clouds into attack position, their pilots are suddenly faced with an unpleasant surprise. These are no bombers - these are F-4 Phantoms, the most lethal fighters in the US Air Force. The Americans have laid a clever trap, and the MiGs fell right into it… --- Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. Including US, German, and Soviet warplanes, along with aircraft developments that took place during World War I, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf War, and special operations mission in between. As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Skies sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect and soundtracks for emotional impact. We do our best to keep it as visually accurate as possible. All content on Dark Skies is researched, produced, and presented in historical context for educational purposes.
