The final video in our series, The Knitters of Newfoundland & Labrador highlights the story of NONIA and Yvonne Sheppard. NONIA is a social enterprise that allows families to supplement their incomes by knitting. They employ roughly 175 knitters throughout the province. The NONIA knitting collective has been a part of Newfoundland & Labrador’s cultural community for over a century.

Yvonne has been a knitter for NONIA for 33 years. She had always been passionate about knitting, but when faced with difficult circumstances, she was able to turn to NONIA and has been knitting for them ever since.

Her story came full circle during the last Royal Visit to Canada in May. At a Campaign for Wool event at Government House in St. John’s, King Charles III, formerly The Prince of Wales, met with a group of NONIA knitters. That group included Yvonne who had the opportunity to meet and speak to His Majesty.

The Knitters of Newfoundland and Labrador is a part of our film series, “The Fabric of Canada” which tells the unique stories of Canadian Wool and the Canadians who transform it.
