In the late 1960s, the mid-engine, rear-drive layout became the accepted recipe for racing cars and supercars. But thanks to Marcello Gandini, working at Bertone, 1972 saw the world's first genuine MR affordable sports car - the Fiat X1/9. With suspension from the Fiat 128 and an overhead-cam engine designed by Aurelio Lampredi, the X1/9 is one of the all-time greats, and fifty years on, it has become one of the coolest Italian cars ever made.
