Introduction:
Everything about this world under the temporary and God regulated rule of Satan is designed to make people numb to spiritual realities.
To make people numb to spiritual dangers.
To make people numb to spiritual riches.
THE GREAT ENEMY OF GOD AND ALL MANKIND IS AT WORK PRODUCING BLINDNESS.
ESV 2 Corinthians 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Even BELIEVERS, having been awakened, are warned about staying awake.
There is a reason for all the times and ways in Scripture that this world is described TO BELIEVERS as a place of darkness, and spiritual slumber.
ESV Romans 13:11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
“STIR YOURSELVES OUT OF YOUR SLUMBER!”
ESV 1 Thessalonians 5:1 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. 2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.
WHAT IS FITTING FOR THE CHILDREN OF LIGHT IS SPIRITUAL ALERTNESS AND READINESS.
And one of the GREAT LIES sold in a slumbering state is the idea that things will always be as we have known them to be.
Even we WHO KNOW BETTER, can be begin to live like the eternal state is not on its way.
What is hidden in that lie is the truth that God has already given us PREVIEWS of the GREAT CHANGE THAT IS COMING.
Even in this current age things have not always been the same.
ESV 2 Peter 3:1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, "Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation." 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
I bring this up because in Revelation chapter 8 we arrive at the breaking of the 7th seal. That 7th seal contains every remaining judgment to be poured out upon the world that leads to the second coming of Christ to the earth.
In that 7th seal, like a telescoping cylinder, there are 7 trumpet judgments and 7 bowl judgments.
