Inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee, the gameplay mechanics in Rivals of Aether share many similarities but also have incorporated creative aspects such as element-based attacks or passive abilities that can affect the stage.
While it may have started off in obscurity or regarded as a "smash clone" the game has come into its own with a unique cast of characters and game design that has attracted a passionate community around RoA.
