Recently, I've been thinking a lot about how the state of 3D platforming has evolved over the last few years. There have been many chances for the genre to undergo a true revitalization, the likes of which we haven't seen since its birth, but none have really taken hold in the way I hoped they would - until now. After embedding myself in just a handful of remarkable indie games and reconsidering my relationship with the genre as a whole, I believe that its future lies in a fundamental design shift representing freedom, creativity, and mastery. This is the expression revolution.
Main games discussed include Yooka Laylee, A Hat in Time, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 64, Bowser's Fury, Pseudoregalia, Penny's Big Breakaway, The Big Catch, and Sonic Frontiers.
