Newport, Rhode Island was the place to summer for members of the 400, the rich, and social climbers.

This included the Astors, Whitneys, Vanderbilts, and Wetmores among many others.

They built some of the grandest mansions in the country, including the Breakers, Rosecliff, the Elms, and Marble House.

The newport social season was crammed with balls, dinners, yachting parties, beach days, tennis matches, Mr. McAllister’s picnics, and carriage parades.
