It has existed across the world and time, but to most people, "pirate" has come to mean the colonial pirates and privateers active during the so-called Golden Age of Piracy. You know, black flags, flintlock pistols, cutlasses, that sort of thing - not falchions or samurai armor. Some define the period rather nichély as ocurring between 1715 and 1725, being the heyday of legends like Blackbeard - others pull it further back to somewhere in the mid 1600s and late 1720s, involving figures like Henry Morgan and Henry Every. The scope of this video will be limited to this latter period. Preferably, the pirates of this era would have a unique name to separate them from other historical pirates, and as we'll discover, they did have several names to distinguish them - they just aren't very well known.
