Join us and discover the harmonic series, or overtone series. This music theory lesson begins with a fundamental note and explains how to derive the overtones from that note that comprise the harmonic series. The video uses the principles of brass playing as a guide to how it all works and lists the first 16 notes of a harmonic series based on C as a fundamental note. We go on to learn how the valves and the slide work on brass instruments in order to capture every semitone / half step of the chromatic scale by combining different transpositions of the harmonic series. We also discover how these overtones enrich the sound of the fundamental note.
