On May 11th, 1953, the 52-year-old SS Henry Steinbrenner was caught in an unexpected storm on Lake Superior. What was supposed to be a mild gale soon ripped open the aging ship, pulling open her hatches, and leaving her exposed to the storm. Now mostly forgotten, the SS Henry Steinbrenner disaster is an all too common story of how an aging freighter and complacency ended 13 lives.
