The Cotswolds contains some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, with rolling hills and abundant wildlife, but if you peer a little further you will find something forged by man that’s equally as mesmerising. The Cotswold Water Park was formed in the late 20th century, gravel was removed, and the extraction process left behind over 180 lakes. With so much water, coving over 40 square miles, it comes as no surprise that angling is a huge attraction to both locals and visitors. The water quality is right up there with the best and as such, carp have flourished in the rich waters and the area is now considered one of the UK’s carp fishing meccas.
To show you what the area is all about, we could think of no better man than Mitch Hammonds. Having lived and breathed the Cotswolds lifestyle for 15 years, he knows his way around the intricate maze of gravel pits and river systems. For this film, we tasked Mitch with two sessions, one in the autumn and one in the spring, targeting a lake he hadn’t previously fished yet is typical of the modern-day venues you are likely to find in the Water Park. Of course, Mitch is full of life, and in his unique style he wades through the carp in the hunt for a big girl.
To complete the film, we also joined Mitch for a day in the life piece, where we followed him through a typical Friday. Working locally, surrounded by his friends, he describes how much he loves the area he lives in and the pride he takes in his work. From there, where else would we go but the pub, swiftly followed by an overnight social with the lads.
