Hägar the Horrible is the title and main character of an American comic strip created by cartoonist Dik Browne and syndicated by King Features Syndicate. It first appeared on February 4, 1973 (in Sunday papers) and the next day in daily newspapers, and was an immediate success.
The strip is a caricature commenting on modern-day life through a loose interpretation of Viking Age Scandinavian life.
During the mid 80's, Hägar the Horrible was the star of a series of advertisements in the United Kingdom for Skol Lager, along with billboards, print ads, and beer mats. As Skol was a Danish brew, it was apt that viking characters should advertise it.
Hägar is voiced by Bill Wallis, a veteran comedian and character actor who voiced the gruff Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz (and Mr. Prosser) in the original BBC radio version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and he plays Hägar as a working class bloke always eager for a pub crawl.
Lucky Eddie is voiced by Kenneth Connor, who was probably better best known as one of the regular cast in the Carry-On series, appearing in seventeen of the original thirty films and many of the associated television productions. He would also make regular appearances in 'Allo 'Allo! and Hi-de-Hi!
These ads consist of everything from Hägar and his best mate Lucky Eddie going for a curry, to Hägar and his wife Helga planning a quiet night in with drinks and a few friends, although they both have very different ideas in what that involves!
Special thanks goes to Hugo "1989Worms1" Goncalves for finding two additional Hägar adverts for Skol that I hadn't seen before; "Pint And Pink Fairy", along with "Extra Strength 1080", both from 1987.
