You may have heard legends about Ferruccio Busoni's Piano Concerto in C major, Op. 39. This massive, five movement work, which also features a male chorus intoning text about Aladdin, has gone down in infamy in the piano repertoire. Perhaps the most famous interpretation of this piece is the 2001 performance of Marc-André Hamelin performing with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä. In this video, we introduce what makes this piece special, offer a tutorial for curious listeners as to what Busoni might have been thinking, and discuss the challenges of one of the most difficult piano pieces of all time. Pianists Marc-André Hamelin, Garrick Ohlsson, Igor Levit and Benjamin Grosvenor also weigh in to share their own perspectives on the work.
