The Isolation Traverse is a classic ski mountaineering route through the heart of the North Cascades National Park. After having completed the Ptarmigan Traverse on foot last August, I set out to ski the next section of the greater North Cascades High Route this year. Picking up where the Ptarmigan Traverse left off, the Isolation Traverse tours across the largest icecap in the lower 48 states, connecting the Cascade River to the Skagit River. We were in store for 5 days of crossing glacial cirques beneath lofty peaks, camping in gnarly weather, and with luck even some rad skiing.
