In recent years, two Chinese fighter aircraft have emerged which have caused a stir in the West. The first is the fifth generation J-20 ‘Mighty Dragon’, a rival to the F-35, F-22, and Su-57. The other is the J-16, a familiar looking multirole aircraft. Based on the Flanker, it’s designed to match and outperform western designs, like the Super Hornet, and its Russian equivalents. The online chatter is increasingly touting this Chinese fighter as the ‘ultimate flanker’. But is this true? Today, let’s have a look at the J-16.
