In this video, I discuss how you can move with “flow.” That means graceful and powerful movement that isn’t restricted by your own stiffness.
This concept has been preached by many, most famously Bruce Lee, who recommended flowing like water (although that philosophy goes much deeper and it’s something I’ll discuss in future).
Flowing movement is important for performing well in martial arts, in dance, and in sports. It’s the difference between looking stiff, slow, and awkward, or powerful and whip-like. But it goes beyond that: because being able to relax the body and stop fighting your own movements is also how you reduce pain and malfunction as you move through your regular tasks.
Learning to release tension can help you to relieve pain and to conserve energy.
The problem is… it’s really hard to do! How do you relax muscles that you’re contracting unconsciously? How do you train yourself not to muscle through tasks?
There are a few answers that I discuss in this video: using some kind of flow practice, is one. Another is to use what I call “de-coupling.” That’s learning to move one joint while keeping the surrounding areas inactive.
Combine these strategies and you might just achieve flow!
