Maria Khitrikova, the daughter of the famous Soviet climber Vladimir Khitrikov, was truly a rising star of female mountaineering with a few eight-thousanders under her belt by the time she was 21. However, on March 2, 2012, Maria tragically died on the descent from Mount Elbrus while trying to save two teammates that lagged behind. What went wrong for Masha on that ill-fated day?
