One time I swiped an egg from outside a butter and egg store. The storekeeper was a woman and she saw me. I liked to steal from places with a woman, because one thing I knew for sure was that my mother was a woman, it's inevitable. I took an egg and put it in my pocket. The woman came out and I waited for her to clout me and show some interest. But she squatted down beside me and patted me on the head. She even said: "Aren't you the cutest thing!" First I thought she was trying to get her egg back by playing on my heartstrings, and I held it tight at the bottom of my pocket. I only wanted her to punish me with a clout; that's what a mother does when she notices her kid. But she got up and went to the counter and gave me another egg. And then she kissed me. I had a moment of hope that I can't describe, because it's indescribable. All morning I waited outside that store. I don't know what I was waiting for. Once in a while the woman smiled at me, and I stood there holding my egg. I was six years old or thereabouts, and I thought it was for life, but it was only an egg.
