Shirakawa-go, Gifu, is a World Heritage site known for its gassho-style villages. There is a castle in this area from the Warring States period that is said to have disappeared along with the gold. Its name is Kaerikumojo. In November of Tensho 13, a massive earthquake, later called the Tensho Earthquake, triggered a landslide. The massive amount of earth and sand that surged like a tsunami overcame the Shogawa River and swallowed the castle in one fell swoop. The gold that was said to have been stored in the castle was worth several trillion yen!
Where did Kiun Castle disappear to?
This is the second installment of our historical investigation. Using the “Ema clan's mansion,” a castle from the same period, as a clue, the team narrowed down the burial site of Kiun Castle and undertook a month-long excavation! A round hole, clearly man-made, and bones were also found! From the numerous artifacts unearthed, the “truth of the unimaginable landslide” and the “secrets of Shirakawa-go” emerge!
