Sailing West in the Caribbean is a downwind sleigh ride until you get to Colombia where things often get tricky.
The Sierra Nevada mountain range blocks the Easterly trades and leave the South East corner of the Caribbean open to weather systems from central America. Add on some counter currents and large areas of shallow water and getting to Cartagena from the East leaves you wondering how it became the most important city on the Spanish Main for so many years!
So a difficult sail with a boat fail that could have been disastrous, it was certainly an eventful trip.
