Soren Kierkegaard’s book, Either/Or, presents both an aesthetic and ethical worldview. Contained within the pages of the aesthetic worldview is the diapsalmata, a collection of aphorisms shedding light on this way of life.
Surprisingly, to me at least, the diapsalmata doesn’t paint the aesthetic worldview as joyful and happy, but rather, it’s a philosophy of depression, sorrow, regret, and pessimism. Some of Kierkegaard’s most famous quotes are a part of this collection, each leaving the reading with a sad impression.
There is a lot of framing going on in the diapsalmata. Concepts are framed in a way to show their absurdity and ridiculousness which in turn results in this negative world view. This leads one to wonder if these same ideas could be spun in a more positive way resulting in a drastically different impression.
