In the 1860s a war had broken out in the drawing rooms and design offices of the British naval world. A war hero, Cowper Phipps Coles, was lobbying hard for a rotating turret ship that could brave the worst of the ocean's fury while the navy's chief constructor, Sir Edward J Reed, was pushing for a more measured approach. The result was a shocking series of events that saw a frustrated admiralty turn its nose up at Coles and his supporters - the ship that was born of this uncomfortable situation was a poorly constructed mess. Today we'll take a look at HMS Captain, a battleship that was destined to sink - and doomed by design.
