The Negatives of DLC and Kickstarter in Shoot Em' Ups and Arcade Games. In the past few years, I have grown to notice that current DLC practices and Kickstarter can end up an absolute scourge on the genre of shoot em' ups (shmups) as well as the arcade genre generally. I am aware the discussions of DLC to this point are far from unique and channels like Jim Sterling have covered the topic in depth. However, one angle of DLC and Kickstarter that is not often discussed is the artistic complications these monetization methods can create. Not only can the integrity of the game be damaged by excessive and poorly balanced DLC (think Tekken 7), but also can lead to a great polarization in the fanbase of the genre, like R-Type Final 2. With Kickstarter, you get the typical overhyped flops like Mighty Number 9, but I also discuss the ramifications of taking a self-selected fanbase, with bias, and turning them into investors in a project. I think, if not handled carefully, this practice can wreak serious damage.
