By October 1977, Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, was over 2 years into a murder spree that had seen many attacks and 5 murders. The women of West Yorkshire lived in fear. Although his first four victims had been 'prostitutes' and sex workers, his fifth had been a student....suddenly, no woman felt safe alone!
The Ripper realised the streets of West Yorkshire were being watched closely, so on the 1st October 1977, he drove to the red light district of Moss Side in Manchester. Here, he picked up 20 year old Jean Jordan....and soon afterwards, the women of Lancashire were also in fear as the Ripper had spread his wings.
Jean Jordan was the first Manchester victim of Sutcliffe, and also was the first time he had left a "clue" at the scene (by accident). The £5 note he gave to Jean.....would it be found and traced?
In a bizarre scenario, the body of Jean was discovered by actor Bruce Jones, who went on to play Les Battersby in Corination Street.
Jean is buried in the Manchester Southern Cemetery, right next to the allotments and waste ground where the Ripper murdered her.
