It was thought that the crime was dormant after 42 years of fruitless pursuit, but in the end, the murderer had to surrender to the investigation team's perseverance in solving the case.
On July 31, 1980, after returning from working in the fields, Truong Dinh Khoi heard Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong (mother of victim Phan Thi Khanh) tell Mrs. Khanh's son that she was cracking corn down the hill. Hearing that, Khoi came up with the idea of going to Mrs. Khanh's farming area to rob the gold. When he arrived and saw Mrs. Khanh bending down to pick corn, Khoi covered his face with his shirt and rushed in to snatch the string of cloth Mrs. Khanh was wearing. After that, Khoi bent down and used his right hand to grab a machete from one end of the shoulder bag and killed Ms. Khanh. After committing the crime, Khoi threw the machete to the ground, grabbed the gold, put it in his pocket, went to Highway 1A and walked home.
