The late 80s through the mid-90s was the golden age of PC compatible sound hardware. Adlib, Tandy Sound, Creative Labs Music System and Soundblaster, Covox, Gravis Ultrasound, Roland MT-32, and others took gaming well beyond the PC honker. Recent times have produced a lot of discrete, well-designed clones. In this talk, Alan Hightower takes a look at the complexities, challenges, and even current progress at integrating all of the above cores into one FPGA based ISA sound card.
