The first Venetians were refugees, settling on an archipelago of islands safely out of harms reach — in the middle of a lagoon. From these modest beginnings, a new empire emerged and Venice quickly became home to a melting pot of ethnicities, including Greeks, Jews, and the ubiquitous merchants!
