Under Skip Holtz and Ruffin McNeill, the East Carolina Pirates football program was one of the best in the group of five consistently beating North Carolina, NC State, and Virginia Tech although they had a much smaller budget and came from a much smaller conference. However, incompetence by the administration would lead to the downfall of the once-great program and financial issues for the university overall. Although they had a rough 2-10 season last year, under Mike Houston, the Pirates have returned to bowl games in 2 of the last three years and are projected to finish towards the top of the American this season.
