"The Rosa Bonheur Case" is a documentary web-series co-directed by Carole Cassier and Anna Polonyi about the French artist Rosa Bonheur and contemporary queer culture. EPISODE 1.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rosa Bonheur was a highly successful 19th-century painter and considered by many as the first French lesbian to live openly with her partner. That’s what led us to visit her home, the Chateau de By, on the outskirts of Paris. But to our surprise, on the museum tour, the words lesbian or homosexual never came up. On a subsequent visit, the museum owner assured us we were mistaken: the LBGT community had claimed the wrong lady. We found this...rather intriguing. And thus, a documentary web series was born.
“The Rosa Bonheur Case” is an indie documentary web-series that explores the many ways this forgotten superstar sheds light on issues in contemporary queer culture. We may never know what went on behind closed doors, but what we do know is that Rosa Bonheur crystallizes a number of burning concerns around visibility and representation in France today.
