Chapati, also known as roti, is an Indian unleavened flatbread made from whole wheat flour. It is a staple food in many Indian households and is often served with curries, vegetables, or lentils. Chapatis are soft, slightly chewy, and have a mild, nutty flavor. They are made by rolling out dough into thin circles and cooking them on a hot griddle (tava), sometimes finishing with direct flame to make them puff up.
Chapati Recipe
Ingredients (Makes 8 chapatis)
2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
¾ cup warm water (adjust as needed)
½ teaspoon salt (optional)
2 teaspoon oil or ghee (optional)
Extra flour for rolling
Instructions
Prepare the Dough:
In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour and salt.
Gradually add water while kneading to form a soft, pliable dough.
knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth.
Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 20–30 minutes.
Rolling the Chapati:
Divide the dough into equal portions (about the size of a golf ball).
Lightly flour a surface and roll each portion into a thin, round disc (~6-7 inches in diameter).
Cooking the Chapati:
Heat a tava or flat pan over medium-high heat.
Place the rolled chapati on the hot pan and cook for about 30 seconds until bubbles appear.
Flip and cook the other side for 30–40 seconds, pressing gently with a spatula.
Flip again and cook until it puffs up. You can place it directly on the flame for extra puffing.
Serving:
Remove from the pan and apply ghee/butter if desired.
Serve hot with curry, dal, or vegetables.
Enjoy your homemade chapati!
