I. This episode I use a deer bone and a sleeking bone (which I accidentally call a skiving bone) to smooth out scratches in shell cordovan. Either of these tools work, as does the ebony burnishing tool to smooth out and help nourish shell cordovan that’s been scratched. The solvent does a lot of the work. Many people just use a spoon, but the bones and the ebony have oils in them that are absorbed by the cordovan. Tan age of shell cordovan has this oil layer in the surface of the membrane that allows the scratches to nearly disappear, as is shown in the video.
Sleeking bones, deer bones and ebony tools are all available where shell cordovan shoes and boots are sold. I bought the deer bone from Kirby Allison, the sleeking bone from Brogue and the ebony tool on Amazon.
