South Indian music and dance have long been shaped by a rich tapestry of instruments, each carrying centuries of history and evolution. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive exploration of these musical treasures, MOPA has embarked on an ambitious documentary series called The Sound Alchemists, that traces their journey from antiquity to the present.
The series takes its name from the idea that musicians and instrument makers are true alchemists—transforming wood, metal, and string into ethereal soundscapes. Just as alchemy seeks to refine and transmute base elements into something extraordinary, the artists featured in this series have shaped and redefined the sonic possibilities of their instruments through innovation, mastery, and dedicated hard work.
More than just an archival endeavor, this series is a conversation—each episode unfolds through the artistic lens of a singular practitioner, offering a deeply personal yet historically grounded narrative. By anchoring each documentary in the life and work of a contemporary artist, MOPA seeks to spark new dialogue on the role of these instruments in an evolving musical landscape.
The first episode spotlights the Veena, an instrument deeply intertwined with the region’s classical traditions through the perspective of the prodigiously talented Ramana Balachandhran. It aims to open new vistas for discussion—on performance practice, pedagogy, craftsmanship, and the evolving soundscape of Indian classical music. The series aspires to be a catalyst for critical engagement, inspiring musicians, scholars, and audiences alike to reexamine the legacy and future of these instruments. By bridging historical depth with contemporary perspectives, MOPA hopes to create an enduring resource that will celebrate and preserve the living tradition of these instruments for generations to come.
