काठमाडौंबाट भएको त्यो प्लेन अपहरण ll The Story of the IC-814 Hijacking ll Behind The Crime ll Case No. 2

IC-814, an Indian Airlines Airbus A300, was hijacked on December 24, 1999, while flying from Kathmandu, Nepal, to New Delhi, India. Five armed Pakistani militants from the terrorist group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen seized control of the aircraft shortly after takeoff. The plane, carrying 176 passengers and crew, was forced to make multiple stops in Amritsar (India), Lahore (Pakistan), and Dubai (UAE), before finally landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan, which was then under Taliban control. The hijackers demanded the release of several militants imprisoned in India, including Maulana Masood Azhar. The Indian government, after seven days of tense negotiations, agreed to their demands to ensure the safe return of the hostages. On December 31, 1999, three high-profile terrorists were released in exchange for the passengers. One passenger, Rupin Katyal, was killed during the ordeal. The hijacking exposed serious lapses in airport security and diplomatic challenges for India. The released terrorists, particularly Masood Azhar, later played key roles in planning attacks against India, including the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. The IC-814 hijacking remains one of India's most infamous cases of terrorism and highlighted the challenges of negotiating with terrorists.
