This week (October 19-25, 2007) marks the anniversary of Operation Rock Avalanche, which was a six-day offensive in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan led by 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
The events of those days forever changed the lives of those involved and many others, resulting in the loss of three incredible Paratroopers (SSG Larry Rougle, SPC Hugo Mendoza, SGT Joshua Brennan), as well as at least 7 WIA. Following the events, SSG Sal Guinta was awarded the Medal of Honor exactly three years later, making him the first living recipient of the Medal since the Vietnam War.
This video details SSG Guinta's story and experience during the operation, as well as the events leading up to him receiving the Medal of Honor. There are many interviews detailing this, all worth watching in my opinion. Also, check out the films, "Restrepo" and "Korengal" for an even deeper look into Operation Rock Avalanche and the 173rd's deployment to the Korengal.
