The Truth About Salvation: Why Obedience Won’t Save You!
In this powerful sermon jam, Voddie Baucham and Paul Washer passionately preach on the true nature of the gospel—salvation by faith alone in Christ alone. Many misunderstand the gospel, thinking that obedience is a requirement for salvation. But as Baucham emphasizes, obedience is not what the gospel requires—it is what the gospel produces. If salvation were based on our obedience, then Christ’s atoning work would be unnecessary. Instead, the gospel is entirely the work of God in Christ.
Paul Washer expounds on 2 Corinthians 5:21, showing the breathtaking reality of Christ’s substitutionary atonement:
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
🔥 Key Themes in This Message:
1️⃣ Christ’s Sinless Perfection – Unlike us, Christ never had a single moment tainted by sin. His perfect obedience made Him the only worthy substitute for sinners (Hebrews 4:15).
2️⃣ The Greatest Sin – Washer challenges us with a convicting thought: The greatest sin is breaking the greatest commandment—loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:37-38). None of us have loved God as we should, yet Christ loved the Father perfectly on our behalf.
3️⃣ The Problem of Modern Christianity – Too many today live in spiritual busyness, neglecting deep meditation on the truths of Christ. We must slow down and consider the infinite worth of Jesus (Psalm 46:10).
4️⃣ The Doctrine of Justification – Justification is not about being made righteous but being declared righteous before God’s judgment throne. It is a legal verdict, where we are treated as righteous because of Christ’s finished work (Romans 3:24).
5️⃣ Imputed Righteousness – On the cross, Christ bore our sin, and in exchange, His perfect righteousness is credited to all who trust in Him (Philippians 3:9). This is the heart of the gospel—our sins placed on Christ, His righteousness placed on us.
6️⃣ Why Preach About Sin? – Washer reminds us that without understanding the depth of our sin, we cannot grasp the greatness of Christ’s atonement. Those who know how much they have been forgiven will love Christ deeply (Luke 7:47).
🔴 What This Means for You:
Salvation is not about earning favor with God. It is about trusting in Christ alone. Obedience will follow as a joyful response, but it is never the condition for salvation. This is why the gospel is truly good news—because God has done for us what we could never do for ourselves.
